Jill Biden had three lesions removed Wednesday in outpatient surgery at Walter Reed National Military Hospital — at least two of which were determined to have cancer.
Dr. Biden had a procedure to remove a lesion above her right eye, which White House Dr. Kevin O’Connor said had been confirmed to be basal cell carcinoma.
Doctors also cut a lesion from her left eyelid and sent it for microscopic examination to determine if it was cancerous.
They also found a lesion on her chest, which appeared to be basal cell carcinoma, and doctors extracted it. They later confirmed it was that type of skin cancer.
“All of the cancerous tissue has been successfully removed,” said O’Connor.
She is suffering from facial swelling and bruising, but is expected to return to the White House later Wednesday. She spent nearly eight hours in the hospital.

The lesion was found during a “routine skin cancer screening,” according to a memo
Dr. Kevin O’Connor said one of the lesions was diagnosed as basal cell carcinoma, another was removed because it appeared to be the same type of skin cancer, while a third was removed and sent to a lab.
Mohs Surgery is an outpatient procedure in which thin layers of skin are cut away and tested for cancer.
Jill Biden’s office announced last week that she would undergo the procedure.
In April 2021, she underwent a “common medical procedure” at an outpatient clinic near the George Washington University campus.
And in July 2021, she traveled to Walter Reed to have debris removed from her foot after stepping on an unnamed object while walking on a beach in Hawaii.

Wednesday’s proceedings concluded after the Bidens returned from a three-day trip to Mexico, where they met their Mexican and Canadian counterparts as part of the “Three Amigos” summit.

She praised the NFL for “teaching our kids the values of respect and integrity.”

Jill Biden, who teaches English at Northern Virginia Community College, did make the schoolchildren a little sad on Monday.
“You know I’m a teacher, so I’m just wondering, did you skip school to be here?” she said. “Maybe,” she remarked when the children looked sheepish. “Okay, thanks for being here.”
Before Monday’s NFL event, she hosted a talk on women’s empowerment at the official residence of US Ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar.
“We never sat still,” she told the group. “But women have been silenced. For many women around the world, raising their voices is a struggle and they had to fight for a place at the table.
“When women are left behind or driven out, it hurts us all. But when women get the opportunities they deserve, there’s no limit to what we can do.”
